10 Smart Tips to Help You Pack Like A Pro

Whether you’re moving down the street or across the country, packing up your entire life presents a challenge. However, a few simple packing tips can make all the difference.

Knowing how to pack like a pro will make your move more efficient and help prevent accidental damage. The good news is, it’s easier than you might think! Start with these ten smart tips.

1. Use the Right Moving Boxes

It’s worth the investment to purchase sturdy, high-quality moving boxes. Make sure you have a variety of different sizes and shapes available. You’ll want to pack heavy items, like books, in smaller boxes so they don’t get too unruly.

2. Avoid Empty Space

Empty space in boxes allows items to shift around. This is one of the most common ways damage occurs. You can avoid this by using packing paper, foam peanuts, or clothing to fill gaps.

3. Don’t Overfill Your Boxes

Overpacking your moving boxes is a common mistake. Try to make sure each box weighs no more than 50 pounds so they’re easy to carry.

4. Label Each Box Clearly

Use a label to make a list of each item you place in your moving box and attach it to the outside of the box. Be as specific as possible. Instead of labeling a box “Dishes,” write “Drinking glasses, cereal bowls, etc.”

5. Color-Code Your Boxes

When taping your boxes closed, use a different color tape for each room. This will make unloading your moving truck a breeze!

6. Pack Plates Vertically

Just like eggs don’t usually break if you press on the top and bottom, your plates will be safer if you pack them vertically. Wrap them individually in paper or bubble wrap and line them up on their side.

7. Keep Your Clothes on Hangers

You’ll save time both packing and unpacking if you keep your clothes on their hangers while you move. Purchase a couple of wardrobe boxes or poke the hangers through the bottom of a trash bag and pull it over to cover your clothes.

8. Photograph Electronic Setups

Before taking your electronics apart, take a photo of the connections. This way, you’ll know exactly how to set everything back up when you arrive at your new home.

9. Don’t Lose Your Nuts and Bolts

When you disassemble furniture, keep all the nuts and bolts together in a plastic bag. Label it clearly and tape it securely onto the furniture it goes with.

10. Hire a Packing Service

Did you know you can hire a full-service mover to handle all your packing and unpacking for you? Many customers find the time-savings and elimination of stress well worth the cost. If you’re tight on time or just don’t want to deal with it, this is the best packing tip for you!
